The question is,"how do you get a salesperson to be likable"? There are 50 years of research into that question. Here's some nuggets from an interview with Robert Cialdini and his book "Influence: The Psychology of Persuasion. Cialdini puts the basic universal principles and decision triggers that influence and motivate people in the best context for on-going business. He emphasizes the importance of taking the high-road when practicing these principles and decision triggers. An ethical approach will produce the long-term relationships we need to grow our business. There are 3 major routes that lead to a positive connection:

1. Similarities

We like people who are like us.

The ethical way to do it is to find something that's genuinely in common; i.e."Oh,  you're a golfer, me to."  Find a real connection between the two of you a have a genuine conversation. Not only will the person like you, you'll come to like that person.

It's not that your client likes you that's important, it's when your client perceives that you really like them that's important. That's when the influence barriers come down.

The point is that you want people to stay with you, make themselves available to influence, and see themselves as one with you.

Find a way to like them and that's what keeps them with you.
2. Compliments

People love flattery. Get in the habit of praising; i.e. their tie, home, lawn, children... But even more effectively is to be genuine. Find something commendable about that person to remark on.

I use the principles of the Law of Attraction and simply look for something to appreciate. Perhaps it's their smile, sense of humor, punctuality, passion, empathy etc. Find something admirable and give genuine praise. There is always something to appreciate when you are focused and in harmony with your goals.

Not only will that person come to like you, but you've found a way to like that person. Now you've got the best context for on-going business.coop3
3. Cooperative Endeavours

We like the people we cooperate with toward common goals. When two people genuinely like each other they find a way to make good things happen.
